I like to try lots of teas; some expensive tea, some not. I have to make a monthly tea budget for myself in order to keep my savings in check. But good tea does not have to be a luxury purchase. In fact, many of the major tea producing countries are also the biggest tea drinking countries, so there is a large market for daily sipping teas. Tea is the second most popular drink in the world behind water, after all.
Have your tea and drink it too
You don’t have to choose between a $25 per ounce bag of Formosa Red Assam and a $4 box of Lipton. There are many wonderful tea producers and importers that care about the quality of the tea and the quality of life of the farmers producing it.
Arbor Teas
Arbor Teas is a great example of a brand that cares about the environment, the farmers and the quality of tea. Many of their teas are certified fair trade, which is one way an importer can protect the livelihood of the farmers. Some of their teas are organic, as well, which means harsh chemical pesticides are not used. I was also surprised to see that, when my first box of teas came in the mail, they were packaged in compostable bags. That endeared me to the company.
Smith Teamaker
Smith Teamaker is another company that has delicious teas for reasonable prices. Some of their teas come in sachets, which make it easier to grab a single cup of tea. The sachets are made from plant-based materials and are biodegradable. They have maintained close relationships with their tea producers, as well. You might even find their teas in a grocery store or café near you.
Some teas do cost more
Expensive tea has its place. The best tea I’ve ever had was from Tea Drunk, and cost $77 for an ounce. That’s a special occasion tea, for sure! However, you don’t have to skimp on quality to cut costs. And you especially don’t have to endanger farmers or the environment, either.
